Sports tape and strapping covers a range of products used for support, protection and injury management in sport.

Terms like sports tape, strapping tape, athletic tape and physio tape are often used loosely and interchangeably, which can be confusing if you’re not sure what you need. In practice, the right choice of tape depends on what you need it to do.

The options below help you choose the right type.

How to choose your tape

Most sports taping falls into two broad approaches:

Rigid taping uses non-stretch tape to limit movement and provide firm support to a joint.

Supportive taping uses stretch tapes to allow movement while still providing compression or support.

If you’re not sure where to start, it’s usually best to think about whether you need to restrict movement or allow it, then choose the type of tape accordingly.

Zinc Oxide Tape

Rigid sports tape used for firm strapping and joint support. Common for ankles, wrists and fingers where movement needs to be restricted.

A stretchy, heavy-duty tape used for compression and support where some movement is still needed.

A lighter, stretchier form of elastic adhesive bandage that can be torn by hand. A quick and easy option for supportive taping in sport.

Sticks to itself rather than the skin. Used to secure dressings or provide light support without adhesive contact.

A flexible tape designed to move with the skin and be worn for longer periods. Commonly used in sport and therapy settings where a low-profile, lightweight tape is preferred.
